Week 2: Definitions, Literature and Keywords

Composition – For me, I like the idea of producing a piece that has been carefully constructed and composed. I believe that this stage of deconstructing and constructing ideas is part of the art and each action adds to a non-visual collage in my head.

Bass/Low Frequency – After years of watching live music and just generally being a person, walking around and experiencing the world, the most pleasurable noise to me always occupies lower frequencies. I love how my body and inanimate objects react to these lower frequencies. It also interests me how lower frequencies occupy more space in a mix, and are usually mono/panned centre. I know this would be due to the fact that the ear struggles to hear frequencies below a certain point, and that these inaudible frequencies are usually to be felt and not heard.

Synthesis – Recently I have began to explore synthesis a lot, using software like Serum to experiment and understand the characteristics of, for example, different wave shapes, LFO modulation, ADSR envelopes. The idea of synthesis (and resynthesis) is very interesting to me because of their limitless possibilities; you can make a kick drum out of any sound as a basic example.

Space – Although vague, the keyword space proposes lots of different thoughts and ideas to me. Space could mean creating an installation where space is the core of the piece, inviting the audience to understand the space they’re in through sound. For example, the piece could be shown in an industrial warehouse, or a church, and the sound art could just be a catalyst to allowing the audience to think about the feel and history of the space. On the other hand, space could just be a small factor to a piece. For example, it may be used to manipulate how the piece sounds or used to create a certain effect.
